UKSMDT Celebration: Annual training retreat for Somatic Movement Dance Practitioners/Therapists

hosted by UKSMDT at Penny Brohn UK

Dates: Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th, Monday 5th of September 2022

Call for practical sessions & practice-based research

Come along to breathe, move and relax, or offer a training session, sharing your expertise. We welcome proposals from somatic movement dance practitioners who are interested in contributing to our annual training retreat. The retreat provides ongoing training for practitioners from across the UK & Republic of Ireland, held in a healing space and supportive environment. We welcome proposals from practitioners who would like to transmit their skills and approach, in a supportive environment, with an emphasis on sharing and developing best practice. We also welcome proposals from practitioners who would like to hold a seminar, discussing a particular topic, such as the ethics of touch, or widening access and supporting diversity. The retreat provides ongoing training for our members as part of their registration, but we welcome non-members, as well as students.

It is important for us to slow down, breathe and offer a conference arising out of somatic values and principles, so practical sessions can last up to 2 hours.

Penny Broch retreat center provides a wonderful space to rest, reflect and heal. You might want to stay at Penny Brohn (with breakfast, lunch, and an evening meal) or book an Air B &B in Bristol. Penny Brohn has 26 beautiful ensuite rooms, extensive gardens, a large studio, a chapel, and a library. Please see how to book further below.

We welcome diverse approaches, with a focus on the importance of transmitting and disseminating studio-based skills, widening access, and supporting diversity. We also welcome academic papers arising out of practice, and therefore, welcome research that grows out of qualitative, ethnographic, anthropophagical, autobiographical, and arts-based practice-led methodologies.

We welcome proposals for:

  • Practical sessions sharing your skills, with an emphasis on transmitting your skills and knowledge
  • Seminar discussions unpacking relevant topics, such as the ethics of touch, or widening access and supporting diversity
  • Academic research papers sharing findings from practice-led embodied research methodologies
  • Sessions, practical or otherwise, rooted in socio-historical/economic awareness, diversity, and widening access

Please submit an abstract proposing your area and why it is relevant to current practice to karinrugman@uksmdt.co.uk and amandawilliamson@uksmdt.co.uk. The proposal should be between 800-1,200 characters max. Ideally, your proposal should connect to one or more of the following areas:

Training approaches, and skills, perhaps focusing on and unpacking particular elements of practice, that support the efficacy of sessions.

Widening access and supporting diversity.

Sharing the underpinnings of a modality and/or sharing a hybrid approach.

The ethics of practice in University and/or freelance contexts

The ethics of touch and sensitive artistry of bodywork.

Experiential anatomy and physiology (science & creativity).

Transpersonal approaches rooted in Jungian/post-Jungian movement methods/models.

Movement analysis and integration.

Working one-on-one.

Health and safety for participants and facilitators.

Research and practice with specific demographics/communities.

The problems faced by practitioners in the current climate

Proposals must be submitted by the 15th of July 2022, or earlier if possible, with name, contact details, and institutional affiliation (or freelance).

The cost of the conference is £100 for the board and our members

For non-members, the cost is £150
